Trek from Luang Namtha-Muang Sing on Old Falangs trail
*”Falang” is the Laotian word for Frenchman, but it is now commonly used for any westerner. It is believed it was derived from the noun ‘Français’ and turned with the Asian pronunciation into Farancet-faragn-falang, the latter being that Asians have difficulties in pronouncing the letter ‘r’ easily. Thus “Falangs Trail” means “the French trail”. When Muang Sing came under French rule, France built the trail from Muang Sing to Luang Namtha-Huay Xai (Laos-Thailand border), On December 2, 1975, the king of Laos was forced to abdicate his throne and the Lao People's Democratic Republic was established. Consequently, the “Falang Trail” came under Laotian Government control and it was inaccessible for fifty years. Recently the Laotian government has allowed for it to be part of a trekking trail. For more info about the trail please read “History of Old Falangs Trail”.
